How to Maximise the Space in Your Skip

It is perfectly normal to want to get your money’s worth when investing in a service like skip hire and ensure that you are able to dispose of as much waste as possible in a safe and suitable manner. After all, there is nothing worse than realising too little too late that you have chosen the wrong size for the needs of your project. Here at PWM Skip Hire, our team works closely with each of our clients to ensure that this doesn’t happen, but sometimes we all need a bit of wiggle room to ensure that those last few items fit. Read on as we explain how to maximise the space available in your skip…

Compression

If your project involves a lot materials that can be easily manipulated then it’s possible to create extra space by simply compressing them. For instance, paper and cardboard boxes can be flattened under enough weight so that they no longer take up as much room as they previously did, and the same can be said for garden waste like grass, plants and leaves. Simply compress the materials before placing them into the skip or compress them afterwards in a safe manner by using your own body weight.

Smaller Pieces

The materials that are bulky and impossible to compress can often take up a lot of room inside a skip, however there is a light at the end of the tunnel. For instance, breaking down unwanted or damaged wooden furniture like tables, chairs, wardrobes and desks into smaller pieces will ensure that they only take up a third of the space that they previously would have done. This is because their rigidity makes it hard to ensure that all the space inside a skip is used up and often results in a lot of gaps between different materials, however breaking them down reduces the likelihood of this happening and often gives you a lot more wiggle room for debris.

The bulk of your waste and unwanted materials often depends on the type of project that you are carrying out as some items are easier to compress than others. In addition to this, it is important to ensure that you don’t overfill a skip to the point where materials could spill over the rim as this may put the collection team at risk.
